logogaim.gifConnect to multiple IM (instant messaging) accounts simultaneously in a single application, including: AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, and Zephyr networks.
By using Gaim you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger (not such a rare need nowdays with all the different IM apps available) , and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time. While supporting many of the common features such as file transfer, away messages, and typing notification, it also provides many unique features as well as plugins support. Gaim is under constant development, and releases are usually frequent.

You can find out more here, and download it here.

Available for:

logoxchat.gif XChat is an IRC chat program for both Linux and Windows. It allows you to join multiple IRC channels (chat rooms) at the same time, talk publicly, private one-on-one conversations etc. Even file transfers are possible.
All versions except the Windows version can be found free here (windows users read on).
The official X-Chat for Windows version has been made shareware (30 days trial) and therefore it no longer has a place in this list, X-Chat code though is still open-source and licensed under GPL. So there are a few free non-official builds, among them the most active and up to date I have found are:
SilvereX more info and/or download, and
Paces more info and/or download.

Available for:

  • Windows (read above info)
  • MacOS X
  • Linux
  • Free BSD
